October 2008

This month I thought it might help to list events by date, like a calendar. However, some organizations offer multiple events or dates. These appear at the end of the column.

Festive practices are derived from a blend of pre-Hispanic rituals and Christian customs. Mexicans honor their dead by decorating family grave sites and attending memorial services held in local ceremonies.

Ticket holders ($200 pesos) will bid on their favorites and literally buy the clothes off the models’ backs.      The Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala had an interesting lineup of events in September. The series started on September 6 with a concert by the Golden Strings, a group of young musicians from the Lake Chapala area, directed by Victor Medeles, and formed to promote learning and appreciation of music by young people.
On September 13 there was an exposition of carved art works using different materials created for engraving in wood, metal and other materials--sponsored by the Jalisco Department of Culture.
On September 27 at 7 p.m., the group Pilar de Coffeen with flute, guitar and drums presented a concert of trova, a Latin American form that touches on social justice.
Admission is free for all events. In addition, the Cultural Center will continue its classes in various musical instruments, painting, ceramics, drawing, theatre, photography and engraving during the fall semester. Most of the classes are open and may be entered at any time. Contact the center at 1500 Gonzalez Gallo Ave. in Chapala or call 765-7424 for complete information.
Lakeside Harmonizers are rehearsing. The roll call is about 20 with a mixed quartet. Since they sing a cappella (unaccompanied by music), each musical range has a lead which helps to keep them on tone. I had the opportunity to listen and appreciate the talent. It was only their fourth practice and they gave me shivers they were so good. So keep an eye open for announcements.
